Daughters of Kerala is a wonderful collection of 25 short stories spanning a period of 7 decades by award winning Malayalam authors translated into English.

Daughters of Kerala attempts to share with the reader the life of a people in a small state in India. The stories reflect the lives of the three major religious groups: Hindus, Muslims, and Christians and represent the experiences of women from a range of backgrounds --social, economic, marital and educational.

As suggested by the title, the selection was meant to highlight the struggles and triumphs of Kerala women. Everyone who reads the stories will identify with one story or another.

What Others Are Saying

"The quality of the writers (many of them legends in the field), the range of their concerns (all dealing creatively with women in 20th century Kerala society) and the accessible directness of the translations (by an experienced collaborator of the eminent R.E. Asher) make this book a particular pleasure to read."

- Shashi Tharoor

"To immerse one-self in these stories is to be drawn into a strange magic."

- Lyn Richmond
